about us

Cape Fear Studios was established in 1989 and is the one and only visual arts cooperative in Fayetteville. We have been in the same location on Maxwell Street since our beginning and pride ourselves in growing each year. Local artists pay a membership fee each year and volunteer their own time to help, in union with the Cumberland County Arts Council and generous donors, in the operations of the Studio.

CFS is comprised of a gallery, a retail area, and eight artist studios.

In the gallery and retail area we show works of pottery, sculpture, photography, painting, glassworks, jewelry, and various other mediums. These are unique pieces created by our over 40 member artists and rotated on a monthly basis. We are also proud to feature a new exhibit each month in the main gallery at the front of the Studio. Featured artists include Cape Fear Studios members, local artists, and even artists known on a national level. Each new exhibit opens in conjunction with downtown’s 4th Friday, a monthly gallery crawl featuring art, street vendors, and specials at many downtown establishments. We invite you to stop in to see our newest exhibit, meet our artists, shop, and have refreshments.

In addition to our gallery and retail area, Cape Fear Studios also boasts 8 fully functional studio spaces which are rented by our member artists. Huge skylights throughout our building let in natural light and make this a wonderful place to work. When you stop in to visit, please feel free to wander in and out of the studios, watching the artists work or looking at their pieces in progress. In-house studios currently have 6 painters, one jeweler, and one potter.

Cape Fear Studios, in the tradition of North Carolina's wonderful pottery reputation, also features two pottery wheels and a kiln room. The wheels, one kick and one electric, are available at an hourly rate for all members of the community, and we also fire ceramic pieces for any member of the community who requires that service. Prices vary based on the size of the piece(s) and the number of pieces loaded into the kiln. For more information on

prices, please contact the phone number below.

We are located on Maxwell Street between Franklin and Russell Streets and our hours are:

Monday-Friday: 11am – 5pm
Saturday: 10am – 4pm
Sunday: closed
