October 11 & 18, 2008 - drawing and painting in oil pastel

Description: This is an intensive two day workshop for those who like to draw and are interested in trying a new medium that is not only "beginner friendly," but non-toxic, economical, and portable. This class is beneficial both as an introduction to composition and color theory for beginners and as a "cross-training exercise" for those who work primarily in other media. The expected outcome of this workshop is to have each student successfully complete more than one painting of a subject of their choosing in the medium of oil pastel.

Demonstrations will focus on specific oil pastel techniques for landscape, still-life, and portraiture and will be followed by one-on-one instruction. There will also be group sharing and problem-solving sessions.

Topics to be covered include: composting and cropping an image without destroying the reference photograph; enlarging an image using the grid method; characteristics unique to the medium; surface choices and the appropriate preparation; layering and blending color in the medium; scratch drawing; handling and storing unframed work; and suggestions for framing. The depth of each subject presented will be determined by the needs of the participants.

Instructor: Well-known Pinehurst artist Joanne Gill Worth returns to Cape Fear Studios for this workshop. Highly respected for her realistic landscapes, Joanne has taught a previous well attended and highly praised workshop at the Studios.
